To the Editor:
On Sept. 6, Lower Township approved changing the zoning for the Brine restaurant property from commercial to residential. The plan calls for the removal of the restaurant and warehouse on the property to be replaced with six residential lots.
The project, as proposed, is a much better option than previous proposals that called for higher density housing, and I applaud the owner of the restaurant for the thoughtful design. However, I do believe we can do better, but it will require creativity and a three-way partnership with Lower Twp., the Crest, and the property owner.
First, a little background that shapes my thinking on this.
If one thinks about any of our shore towns, and the things they remember most and keep them coming back, it is the open spaces, public venues, events and other community-provided amenities. Places like the beach, the boardwalk, Sunset Lake, Sunset Beach, Centennial Park and so much more.
The work the Crest did to improve the Sunset Lake frontage, the improvements to the bike path along the water and adding a simple ramp for boardwalk access are lasting improvements enjoyed by all, and good examples.
For this reason, I believe this last parcel of bayfront land is something that should be preserved and enjoyed by everyone for years to come.
I am asking the leadership of these two communities to seek Open Space funding to acquire the land at fair market value and preserve it as an asset for our children and their children to enjoy.
Possibly it becomes a nature center or something related to the terrapin turtles that exit the waters there each spring to lay their eggs. What it becomes can be decided later, but acting urgently to save the site must be acted on today.
