To The Editor:
The construction of overpasses and removal of traffic lights on the Garden State Parkway are long overdue for Cape May County. Full safe access to and from the Garden State Parkway (GSP) at all interchanges is needed now. It has become quite clear that someone in state government does not want this to happen.
Look at what has been taking place on the GSP for the past 10 years. A couple of dozen acres of trees were cut down, overnight, to make a full interchange at the Atlantic City rest stop. Now it will be closed and a new full interchange will be constructed. Where is the study? Thousands of acres of trees were cut down state wide for some unknown reason.
There has been constant work in Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth counties for the past eight years to include over 50 miles of roadway, overpasses and access ways. A new “homeland security fence” has been installed to keep terrorists away from a small part of the bridge at the north part of the county. I don’t see how spending thousands of dollars on a fence with barbed wire will stop any determined person from gaining access to the bridge however, it will stop most wildlife, are they the danger? Were there any wildlife studies to determine the impact of this fence? Yet in Cape May County there is study after study of the conditions surrounding the GSP.
It is time to identify who in the state is responsible for the improvements to the GSP and make it happen. Our local elected officials should do this or state that they are against these improvements. This in sorely needed for the safety of all those who use the Garden State Parkway.
