To the Editor:
Sadness. Fear. Outrage. How could this happen here in Cape May County? After reading a recent article in a local newspaper regarding the opioid problem here in the county, I find myself asking how we got here. Lack of economic opportunity? Boredom? What kind of future do we have here?
Many of us here feel we live in bliss, with close-knit communities, friendly people, hardworking business owners, and a bucolic mix of seashore and rural landscapes. The reality is Cape May County suffers from gaping wounds that affect our future, the future of our children, our well being, and our livelihoods.
We’ve got a rising drug epidemic affecting our children, youth, and adults (24 deaths this year), crumbling (or closed) bridges, disaffected youth, a ranking of last in New Jersey for child safety and well being, high unemployment, and irresponsible county budgets.
So how did we get here? It is natural to look to our county leadership to shape our well being and future. So it’s obvious that after 20 years of one-party management our Board of Chosen Freeholders has got to change.
We need fresh voices, new outlooks, and different ideas. No more ‘same old thing’ to get our county back on track.
Danielle Davies and Gregory Wall, like me, were raised in Cape May County. They have the same hopes for our county but also see the shocking wounds that exist here.
