By Johnson, Sr.,

Dear Editor,
It’s no secret that the economy is impacting residents across New Jersey. At a time when unemployment rates seem to be rising, it is imperative for the Universal Service Fund (USF) to receive continued support and funding for its vital programs including the Lifeline Assistance Program.
The Lifeline Assistance Program provides both wireless and landline telephone service at a discounted rate to low income families in New Jersey. Without Lifeline, these families may not have any telephone access at all. Many New Jersey residents benefit from the Lifeline Assistance Program not only for employment and to stay in touch with loved ones, but most importantly, to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency. At no point should we isolate the most vulnerable residents in our communities when they need it most.
However, right now, some members of Congress are considering cutting or eliminating all USF funds. These cuts will impact Lifeline users who are already struggling in this tough economy as well as negatively impact every other program the USF provides.
I urge Congress to continue the funding of the Universal Service Fund and stop any legislation that will put its programs in jeopardy. The most at risk members of our community need it.
Sincerely,
Reverend Greg H. Johnson, Sr., Pastor
