To the Editor:
This letter is in response to a Spout Off printed in the March 7 edition of the Cape May County Herald, submitted by a citizen of Goshen who questioned the husband and wife serving on the Board of Fire Commissioners for Middle Township Fire District No. 4 (Goshen). For full disclosure, I am related to the husband and wife the spouter mentioned. In fact, three of the five fire commissioners are relatives of mine.
The spouter expressed concerns of impropriety but does not seem to consider the safeguards that help us avoid such impropriety. Voters decide who serves on this board. Elections are held each February.
If you are unable to attend, you may submit an absentee ballot. These ballots may be obtained from the County Clerk’s Office.
If the spouter is interested in running for fire commission, he or she can contact the county clerk and learn how to be included on the next ballot.
Also, the spouter can stay informed by attending the monthly meetings. They are open to the public and held the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the fire station.
In addition to attending meetings, the spouter can log onto Goshen Fire Company’s website for updates.
I am grateful that we have five people in the community willing to give their time and talents to serve. I don’t believe there’s anything illegal or unethical going on with Fire District No. 4, nor do I believe any commission member is “capitalizing” on the position.
Each commissioner receives a very small stipend. No one is getting rich or receiving special rewards, benefits, or treatment by serving on this board.
