To The Editor:
Last week, during aerobics class at the Sea Isle City Community Lodge, smoke suddenly appeared on the ceiling. Led by the instructor, Elayne Anderson, the class hurriedly exited the lodge and a call was made to 911. Almost immediately, a police car came and asked us to move our cars, while ensuring us that the fire department was on its way.
As we watched safely from across the street, a fire truck appeared and soon after another fire vehicle, an ambulance, and more police officers. It was quickly determined that the smoke was caused by a problem with the air conditioner. When it was safe to enter the building again, we were allowed, assisted by the police, to get any personal articles that we had left behind in our hurried exit.
Volunteers man both the Sea Isle Fire Department and the Sea Isle Ambulance Corps. Recently, residents received letters from the fire department requesting donations. I wish everyone could have seen how quickly and efficiently the problem was contained. Among those responding immediately were Fire Chief John Mazurie and Assistant Chief Frank Edwardi, Sr.
Fortunately, it was a happy ending. But the next time you receive a request from a volunteer fire department or ambulance corps, please remember that their unselfish service saves lives and keeps the community safe. I know that the members of the aerobics class will remember.
