Reject ICE Involvement

By Elaine Scattergood, Avalon

To the Editor:
Until I read the Herald, I was unaware that Sheriff Gary Schaffer wanted our county to go into the business of corralling undocumented workers.
Having 30 people show up at a freeholder’s meeting with signs protesting Cape May County’s getting involved with “ICE” (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) surly warranted a front page article, centered and with pictures to alert our county residents.
Is the above plan not going to arouse suspicion that the motive is to help fill up the new $37 million Cape May County jail now that there is a new law on the books regarding bail for people just accused, and according to our Constitution, innocent until proven guilty?
Everyone in Cape May County should object to yet another and even more offensive way to empty our purses. Everyone should object to our considering any involvement with “ICE.”
