To the Editor:
I was in Florida where I learned two things.
The first was from a Kevin Costner movie, “Wyatt Earp.” In it, I saw that many western towns didn’t allow guns inside their towns. If you had them, you had to turn them into the law, which held them until you left.
Then I saw a political ad from a state representative showing a white girl walking down a street and being passed by a Hispanic boy who pulls a handgun from his hoodie and murders the girl at point-blank range. The politician then says that he’s against Florida becoming a sanctuary state.
Under Florida’s carry-and-conceal law, you don’t have to be a resident ergo citizen to get a license to carry.
I passed the state fair and saw signs for gun sales on the fairground. I realized then Florida has a gun-violence culture supported by bad laws.
The shootings at the school were a result of a given cultural permission. If Tombstone saw the wisdom of isolating guns, why can’t we do the same today?
I will not feel safe knowing I’m in the presence of someone carrying a concealed weapon. I offer sympathy to those who support a dumb, gun-violence culture.
