Objects to Spouts Calling for Closing of Wildwood High School

By Brian Melchiorre, Wildwood Crest

To the Editor:
Several years ago, when my two daughters were in middle school, I wrote my first letter to a newspaper. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a strong supporter of our local schools, especially my hometown school, Wildwood High School.
I don’t care for nor do I read Spout Off and because of that my friends and colleagues seem to enjoy pointing out spouts to me just to watch my reaction. In the past few weeks, several spouts bashing Wildwood High School have appeared.
“The school should close, do away with sports programs, too expensive to keep open,” etc. I have defended the choice to send my children to Wildwood High School and before that, I defended and supported the school for as long as I can remember.
Both my daughters are now in college and they continue to make my family proud. My girls tell me they have met and are in classes with students who attended private high schools. There’s nothing wrong with private schools, it’s a family’s personal choice.
My children did very well at Wildwood High School. They were well educated both academically and socially. Wildwood High School prepared them for the next step in higher education and for the world outside of our small community.
We have great schools in Cape May County. I don’t think it’s a good idea to put down or close any of them and I don’t think it’s a good idea to criticize without the courage to sign your name.
