To the Editor:
While the recent landmark decision in California to retire its last nuclear plant may not seem important locally, I have hope that California has started a movement nationally.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) reports in their fall newsletter that the last California nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon, kills some 1.5 billion larval fish each year.
“The United States has close to 100 other aging nuclear plants,” says Ralph Cavanagh, codirector of NRDC’s Energy program.
The waste by-products of nuclear fission do not make clean energy. Pacific Gas and Electric expects to ultimately save customers more than $1 billion.
