To the Editor:
I recently read a letter to the editor regarding the upcoming sheriff’s election. It sounded like the writer had a political ax to grind because much of what he wrote was contrary to common sense workplace values. It encouraged me to share my thoughts and support for Bob Nolan for sheriff.
I have the highest respect for law enforcement, as well as the military. My father was a police officer; the father of my children, a corrections officer, and my brother is a Naval pilot. All these professions require high standards.
As an employer myself, I value workers who possess a strong work ethic, show accountability to the workplace infrastructure and encourage the basic tenet of putting in an honest day’s work for an honest day’s wage.
I personally know Nolan and Undersheriff John Maher. I know their character and integrity as they have a proven track record in espousing these qualities.
They, under the direction and leadership of Gary Schaffer, have brought a greater efficiency to the county jail, like being the first in the country to have internet visitation which cuts down on inmate movements and facilitates visits for families. They have received certification from the State of New Jersey for the correctional center and have worked vigorously to promote a more professional environment.
Best yet, in the past nine years, they have offset tax increases, while still operating under budget and still supplying the best public safety service available.
These are just a few of the many important changes that have been made to upgrade and professionalize our county-jail system. We need to continue this process. Why would anyone want to take a step backward?
