Regarding Publisher Art Hall’s column entitled “Stop-Wait-Wave” Sept 3:
As a 71-year-old pedestrian and bicyclist I read the column about crosswalks with much interest, especially his comment that nine out of 10 motorists ignore the law, or as he, euphemistically put it, “step back from the law.” As someone who spends time each year in both the east and west I can vouch for the fact that those living in New York and New Jersey are stepping back from many laws, especially related to driving, bicycle riding and boating.
When in Washington State I encounter few motorists who ignore crosswalks. When here in Ocean City I fear for my children and grandchildren when they walk or ride their bicycles. I suspect that many motorists (and bicyclists) now breaking the crosswalk law would act differently if they encountered their own children or grandchildren crossing the street.
Pedestrians have a right to cross the street safely. The alternative to crosswalks are expensive traffic signals. Fewer motorists would disobey the crosswalk laws if they knew their taxes would increase to pay for new signals.
