Mom, Dad Become Teachers

By Lew Meehl, West Wildwood

To the Editor:
The Covid 19 crisis will provide an educational test for moms and dads. Many parents will have to make the effort to be the teacher(s) in the home. I wish them luck.
It would be interesting to learn how many parents will struggle, possibly some may give up. Youngsters will then spend hours entertained by means of their phones. Some school systems will attempt to teach through the internet into the home, but many districts are not ready to implement this unprecedented approach.
Schools have had in-service days to orient themselves to the facilitation of an untested process. Should it fall to the parents, along with managing an altered lifestyle, it will not come easily. Hopefully, our children will accept our efforts, and it will be a quality experience for us as well.
Having taught in a public high school for 30 years, with classes of up to 33 students (too often too many not motivated), five periods per day, it’s a challenge unappreciated by many.
Luckily parents are teaching their own. I wish them the best. Once past this crisis, they may want to thank their children’s teachers.
Maybe those who find it comforting to degrade the profession will suddenly find themselves the teachers. Enjoy and stay positive.
