Military Weapons Designed to Kill

By Paul Simons, Wildwood Crest

To the Editor:
I am writing in support of Rev. Dr. Glenn Schoenberger’s position concerning the presence of military weapons in civilian society in this country. I want to add a couple of bits of relevant information.
First, it must be understood that these weapons obliterate the idea that “guns don’t kill people; people kill people.” They were designed specifically to kill people.
They are intended for the soldier in combat who may be confronted with multiple armed assailants and must kill them rapidly or be killed himself. They fire high-velocity rounds, designed to do maximum damage to the human body, very rapidly.
Second, data confirms that owning a gun does not increase one’s safety. A home with a gun in it is more likely to be the scene of death by gunfire from murder, suicide, or accident. In this regard, most gun deaths are from suicide.
Obviously, something is wrong in this country. With far more guns in circulation than anywhere, the answer can’t be, as the NRA claims, more guns.
