To the Editor:
I was shocked to hear a radio ad being run by John McCann, whose voice is heard at the end of the ad, attacking Jerry Thornton. McCann is throwing stones in a glass house. McCann has a pension for being a lifeguard. That’s right; McCann has a pension for his years on the Wildwood beach. He also has taxpayer-funded health benefits.
Gov. Jon Corzine appointed McCann to the County Tax Board. They hold hearings several days a year on tax appeals and McCann doesn’t even make it to all the hearings, but he takes the health benefits that the Cape May County taxpayers are footing the bill for.
For a guy like John McCann, who has a lifeguard pension and taxpayer-funded health insurance, to throw mud at a dedicated public servant like Jerry Thornton is disgusting to me. Thornton has served the people of Cape May County with his heart and soul. He didn’t sit on a beach waiting to collect his pension.
McCann has introduced himself to the voters of Cape May County as a mudslinging hypocrite willing to deceive the voters. It is a shame he is willing to trade his reputation and his family’s good name for a shot at political power.
I am calling on John McCann to stop the dirty ads and start talking about the issues Cape May County voters care about. Does he support spending $32 million dollars on the Beesley’s Point Bridge? Does he support privatizing things like Meals on Wheels? These are the things Cape May County voters want to hear about, not the hypocritical attacks on Jerry Thornton.
