To The Editor:
Recent news reports related the tragic case of Nubia and Victor, 10-year-old twins who were abused by their adoptive parents in Florida. On Valentine’s Day, Nubia’s body was found in a trash bag in the back of her adoptive father’s pick-up truck. She had been beaten to death. Victor, still alive, huddled on the front seat, doused in an unidentified chemical. Tormented by the adults who had pledged to care for them, it took the death of Nubia before Victor was removed from this abusive home.
Stories such as this prompted me to volunteer for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children). A CASA volunteer is appointed by a judge to be a voice for abused and neglected children in court and to identify and advocate for their needs. CASA volunteers speak up daily on behalf of many abused and neglected children in Cape May County, affect positive changes in their lives, and work to prevent further tragedies in lives already touched by sadness and misfortune.
We help them find the safe, permanent, and loving families that all children deserve. Many children in our community are in need. Perhaps you or someone you know can join me in creating a world where all children are safe at night and no child dies at the hands of an abusive adult. Please call CASA at 609-601-7800 to learn more.
