To The Editor:
July 27 was a sad day for a large skate. At about 1p.m., the skate washed up on shore. The creature flapped and struggled to stay alive.
Lifeguards did absolutely nothing to assist the marine animal. They didn’t pour water on it, they didn’t pull it back to the ocean, they just let it sit there and croak.
They claimed, “If we drag it and accidentally hurt it, we would be in violation of a New Jersey law.” At least 10 people offered to pour water on the animal, but the lifeguards kept saying no.
After an hour or so, a backhoe came and scooped up the skate. Unfortunately, it was too late. Boos were loud and common. The crowd was furious, and so was I.
I surely hope the lifeguards will not let a skate die in such a way again. (Supposedly they called Marine Rescue but they said “no.”)
