To The Editor:
When it comes to the call to legalize victimless crimes, there is this belief among most people that these activities that libertarians, including members of the Libertarian Party, want to legalize, they would morally approve of them. That they would morally approve of activities like prostitution, drug use, gay and polygamous marriages, etc. Does this belief match the reality? I know that it does not.
Speaking only for myself, while I believe that prostitution should be legalized, I do not morally approve of men and women selling their precious bodies to commit sex acts for money. I find that offensive. While I frown upon people who use narcotics, I know full well that to continue the war on drugs is a futile effort. The drug war breeds violence in the streets in every town, hamlet and in every city in the United States by drug gangs fighting for turf and organized crime fighting for territory. It has also corrupted law enforcement, not only overseas, but in the United States as well.
The Libertarian Party platform even states that the victimless crimes that would be declared legal do not in any way mean moral approval.
Libertarians, like me, have to do a better job when it comes to explaining this position. I will do just that not only for the purpose of gaining converts, but because it is right.
