I know this letter will never get published, but I felt compelled to write it anyway. A few of my Spout Offs have been ignored and I can think of only one reason: my liberal stand on the issues. I realize that you have the right to print anything you deem appropriate and you, as an editor, can make the final decision. However, if you want to present a “fair and balanced” view of the issues, you ought to allow some dissent.
The way this country is polarized, it seems nowadays, you have to choose sides. There is no room for compromise. We, on the left, think everyone who disagrees with us is a knuckle dragging moron who believes Ronald Reagan was the second coming and George W. Bush was a credit to our country. We believe that the war in Iraq was illegal and was the result of neocon lies and distortions. We are sick of the so-called religious right and joyfully revel in the downfall of their ‘ministers’ when they’re caught with their pants down.
You, on the right, think we are an enemy who wants free spending giveaways and higher taxes. You fear that the immigrant population will cost American jobs and increase crime. And, boy, are you guys tough on crime, but don’t let anyone take away your sacred guns or your Bibles. Having an education is also part of our left-wing conspiracy to control the media. Somehow, intelligence gets a bad rap with Republican “real” people.
When I made a comment about a local politician, Michael Voll, you censored its inclusion in your “Spout Off” column. All I said was I was confused. He registered here, first as a Republican, then as a Democrat. He registered in Florida as a Democrat and now evidently is reregistered here as an Independent. I was confused because I thought voting in two different venues at the same time was a crime. As an ex cop, surely Voll knew that would be voter fraud . Did Voll seek a Florida homestead tax rebate? My confusion continues.
