It Was Only a Mailbox?

By Nash

To The Editor:
On the morning of May 24, right before lunch time, a woman in a dark-colored, compact car ran up over our yard, tore up our driveway and knocked our mailbox down, mail inside, on Route 9 south in the Mayville section of Court House.
Now this in itself may not seem like a big deal, but this woman, by just a matter of seconds, missed my neighbor’s boy who was exiting the car to retrieve their mail from their mail box in the adjacent driveway. My neighbor had put on her signal lights to make her regular right-hand turn into her driveway, turned and stopped to allow her son to get their mail.
The woman in the “dark-colored” car, my neighbor was so frightened by the near miss that she can’t, as of this writing, give a more accurate description, stopped long enough to blame my neighbor for having a left-hand signal light on (at that particular spot on Route 9, there is nowhere to make a left-hand turn) and attempted to pass her on the right side, her first violation.
After stopping long enough to try to convince my neighbor that it was her fault, she got back into her car; it was not damaged enough to prevent her from driving it, and drove away. (Second and third violations, failure to report an accident, and leaving the scene of an accident). A careless driving charge as well as failure to have control of her vehicle figures in there somewhere too and most seriously, endangering the welfare of a child?
I am sure this woman’s convoluted thinking was, “It’s only a mailbox.” True…but what about that child who she narrowly missed hitting by seconds?
While the monetary damages to my husband and I are minimal, the fact that this woman would knock the mailbox down, leave it there with the mail in it, attempt to blame my neighbor and drive off is appalling to me. Is there a Federal offense in here somewhere? Interfering with the mail? Apparently, this woman has no “class” and seriously lacks the virtue of honesty.
My neighbor thinks she will be able to identify this woman when she sees her again. Not to mention this person must have the “DNA” from our mailbox on her right front quarter panel. But why should she worry? It was only a mailbox!
