To the Editor:
Am I the only one having problems with the 4-H Fair concept?
Every year I see pictures of kids hugging their calves, petting their pigs, and proudly displaying their chickens. They lovingly raise these animals, name them, and earn the animals’ trust. And then they are auctioned off and slaughtered … does anyone see the wrongness of this?
Kids love animals. People who go to the fair love animals. So why are we showing compassion and then ending up doing something so cruel? These animals will be killed, butchered, and end up on someone’s dinner plate.
Why not have them slaughtered right there so the public can see the final results? That would never happen because it would be too traumatic and horrible, but guess what? It is traumatic and horrible.
These animals should live wonderful lives and continue to be loved and cared for. That is what 4-H could be doing for them.
It is too sad to think of the final outcome despite the happy pictures I see in the paper.
