In Memory Of Fire Chief Wm. Belles

By Leusner

To The Editor:
On Aug. 7, the Rio Grande Volunteer Fire Company laid to rest Chief William Belles. Belles served as a volunteer firefighter for many years. Not only did he serve as a firefighter, but he also served in a much less glamorous, but in my view, critically important role as a Fire Police Officer.
Thousands of times he responded to requests for assistance from the Middle Township police and other police departments in the county. He manned a traffic post for hours at a time and asked for nothing in return.
In Middle Township, where a bad accident can sometimes take up the entire shift, Belles and his actions allowed police officers to receive back-up they may not have received or a citizen to receive a much quicker response to their emergency.
Chief Belles, rest in peace and know the Middle Township Police Department will be forever grateful for your unselfish service.
