In Defense of LIbraries

By Fallon

To the Editor:
A recent story in the Herald told of the loss of patrons in the last year of the Avalon Public Library. This is an unfortunate story but not because of the library, which is very well run and staffed with fine people. Rather it seems as though some people are losing a great opportunity by bypassing the library.
A few people to whom I have spoken waved their tablets or Epads or whatever they are called and actually told me that they didn’t need a library. Perhaps this is something they have absorbed by a false belief in the totality of the electronic age. I hope it has not been the case in our schools. Have teachers told students that they don’t need a library?
Libraries have always been and will continue to be one of civilizations greatest assets. Nothing any computer of any strength can replace the act of going to a library to find something you didn’t know you want or need. Walking down the stacks and picking out books in any area of your interest will often attract you to something you didn’t expect or are pleased with.
Cape May County and Avalon both have very fine libraries and our lives will be richer if we patronize them.
