Improve Communication and VoteTo The Editor:
What do you hate? I hate senseless violence. Dr. Ben Carson, in his book America the Beautiful, said he hated poverty. He had “an up-close and personal view of poverty.” He worked his way out of poverty as a famous neurosurgeon.
Today in the mail I received another charity appeal. This time it was for PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Since I have a pet parakeet that I like to hear chirp happily, I was sensitive to the quote that PETA used in their advertisement. It was by Mahatma Gandhi. He said, “I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.”
I don’t want anyone to hurt my pet any more than I want to see the crimes of gun violence in America. Nor do I want to see the senseless killing of the children in Syria’s chemical warfare.
So how do we protect the helpless? Is it a military and police mobilization that is to be funded? While I have benefitted from both the military and police, I would rather see more communication in churches, synagogues and mosques, schools, the press, and workplaces.
“Knowledge, not violence, should be the international currency of power.” This is a quote from the Working Group on Girls as reported in Ms. Magazine, spring of this year.
