I had a conversation not very long ago with a man who came to the U.S. from India on a student visa. We got into a conversation about politics and he told me that he is a supporter of President Obama. When I asked him what he liked about the president, he told me that he feels that the government should take care of its people. I replied that according to our Constitution the government is the people.
I reminded him that it states “by the people, for the people;” to which he replied that our Constitution is no longer relevant. This was interesting to me because he originally came to our country for a better education and a better life for his family. People willing to work for it could have a better life here than anywhere in the world, we are “the land of the free and the brave.”
We have elections this year and have what may be our last opportunity to preserve the “American Dream.” Every day we lose more of our rights to make our own decisions about the way we choose to live and raise our families. When did it become the norm for many people to think government (the rest of us) has to take care of them? I am totally in favor of helping people who have fallen on hard times; but I resent taking care of those who feel “entitled to a free ride.”
This quote from Daniel Webster is as relevant today as it was hundreds of years ago,
“It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages that mean to govern well but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters”.
