Gun Violence or Human Violence?

Letters to the Editor 2019

By Drew McLeod, Rio Grande

To the Editor:
As a 17-year-old, I have only lived in a divided U.S. Democrats are saying that all assault rifles should be banned. Republicans are claiming that these weapons are necessary to keep a democracy intact.
I have not completely decided what my opinion is on assault weapons, but I do not think guns are to blame for these shootings. While banning guns might seem like a solution, criminals would get their assault rifles illegally. In this case, the average American would be under much greater danger.
I believe there are two solutions to stopping the majority of mass shootings: Steeper punishment on crime and deeper background checks for gun purchasers.
If the death penalty were used more frequently, fewer people would commit these terrible acts due to the consequence.
Democrats and Republicans need to work together and stop blaming each other for these shootings. The blame should be placed on the shooter.
