To The Editor:
I commend The Herald and Al Campbell for raising community awareness about Project Lifesaver and its invaluable service to the families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementia conditions, as well as special needs children who are at risk of wandering from the safety of their homes.
Project Lifesaver was started in Cape May County over five years ago, thanks to former Sheriff John Callinan and Freeholder Jerry Thornton, in a combined effort by the Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Aging. New Jersey was the first state to have Project Lifesaver on a statewide basis. The Ocean City/Upper Twp. Rotary Dinner Club was the first to contribute to the program and over the years many community and service groups have helped to insure that this service is offered at no cost to the participating families.
A special note of praise and thanks also goes to the volunteer officers in the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office, who visit the program participants each month to service the tracking bracelets and add their personal touch of concern, in the true spirit of community policing.
