To The Editor:
Luck affects us all, that is all of us who believe in it. Among those who do, luck is the subject of ranging dispute, a slice of which is rarely addressed. On what might be called, a philosopher’s level, there are those asserting it is bad to believe in good luck because it promotes laziness while others think it good to believe in bad luck, as such a view reduces one expectation of life always turning out as wanted. An event seldom associated with luck is the timing of birth.
Those who note luck deem themselves fortunate to have arrived at existence during an age of freedom and plenty. Those of another prospective may complain they came forth unlucky, not having been named Rockefeller. Accidents are occasions most often attributed to luck. Here too, interpretations vary. When a man walking slips upon his feet, falls to the sidewalk resulting in a broken arm, he is inclined to swear he suffered an instance of bad luck. Another person, though, might perceive double bad luck at work: the fall, the injury. Yet, a third party could render a split judgement, declaring bad luck caused the fall but good luck intervened to prevent the breaking of both arms.
