‘Declawed’ Cat Won’t Cause ‘Cat Scratch Fever’

By Makiver

To The Editor:
Regarding the letter from Beverly Harris, anyone who has ever owned a cat knows they kill just for fun and even being declawed doesn’t stop them. There has been an explosion of cats world-wide, and all pet cats should be kept indoors. Just in the U.S. cats kill 1 billion birds and 1 billion small animals annually; millions of the man animals are not pests.
Indoor cats still benefit the owner being declawed. Children and pregnant women do not want to get ‘cat scratch fever,’ and a declawed cat won’t damage furniture. Claws are for hunting, protection and escape, all unnecessary in house cats.
I feel bad for Harris, but New Jersey animal shelters alone take in tens of thousands of cats a year; I’m certain she will find a loving pet again.
