Cutting Legal Ads from Newspapers is False Economy

By Martha Wright, Avalon

To the Editor:
The bill to allow government agencies to post legal notices on their websites instead of in newspapers is not about saving money, it is about reducing transparency in government and it is discriminatory. Many senior citizens are not computer savvy nor do they have internet access.
There is no evidence that this practice would reduce costs; indeed it will cost taxpayers more money as each municipality would be obligated to maintain a more robust and up-to-the-minute website. That requires more staff, which in turn costs more in salary and benefits, to be paid by taxpayers.
Who benefits? Government officials who do not want the public to know what they are doing. Tell legislators to vote no when this notion resurfaces.
