To the Editor:
I thought that the Herald reporter’s description of the disagreement between Our Saviour Lutheran Church and Stone Harbor Council concerning the use of its property during the flood abatement project was a bit unfair, although their characterization of the council members’ opinions was right on.
The property in question was described as “undeveloped” and the implication was that it is not often used. In fact, it is used as a parking lot and on any given summer Sunday, 30-plus cars are parked there. It is also in use during other church activities.
Stone Harbor is asking the church to give up the use of its parking facilities for two summer seasons. This will cause great inconvenience to church attendees and will undoubtedly impact the church’s finances.
The church recommended the rental fee based on the value of the property and the commonly expected return on a rental of property. Our Saviour is, in fact, willing to put up with considerable inconvenience to facilitate this project. It simply asks the council to treat it fairly.
