Closing Major Roadway Cost Business Lots of Sales

By O'Quin

To The Editor:
As a business owner operating in Villas on Bayshore Road, I would like to express my opinion on the success of the Block Party and Green Fair on June 5. While I imagine that it took a great deal of time and energy to have this event, I feel that it did not take a great deal of common sense on when and where to have it.
The season for the business community traditionally starts on Memorial Day weekend. Having the fair on the following weekend on a Saturday and closing a major roadway, both in and out of Villas for about eight hours, cost quite a bit of sales for my business. That, coupled with the fact that a lot of people parked in my lot without permission to the detriment of my paying customers.
We sent a letter of concern to both the Lower Township Committee and Chamber of Commerce. Mike Beck, to his credit, did respond and say that perhaps it was not addressed properly. Chamber of Commerce…nothing.
I suggest that perhaps next year it be conducted in a more suitable place, such as the new Lower Township Douglass Field off of Route 9, which has ample space and parking for such an event.
