Clears Up’ His Support for Friend Thornton

By Kelly

To The Editor:
While attending the victory celebration for Jerry Thornton (about to be the most influential man in town and I’m grateful) I heard him say something to the effect that the Republicans of Cape May County are not ultra conservative but moderates just as the County itself is described. The silence from the many disbelievers in the audience was deafening. I know many of these folks and would not attempt to paint them all with one broad brush. Some are greedy while others are more selfish and even more are just plain mean-spirited. The only real common thread I have detected is their lack of intelligent basis for their beliefs.
Any mouthy statistics misquoting self-proposed pundit can fire them right up. For some reason they believe they are the only patriots, spiritually influenced, family-loving people left alive. In reality, as a group they are more likely to be serving their business interests than their country or community. I hope it is because of their fanaticism that these folks are getting all the attention and not because they represent a popular sentiment.
I am cautious because of the current state of affairs in New Jersey. Our governor, who I lovingly refer to as Shrek’s ugly cousin, has declared war on our public servants including, but not limited to, police, firefighters and teachers. Local politicians are taking on public employees at every level. All of this is a way to detract from the real wasteful spending that is our politicians’ livelihood. I spend a great deal of time at our schools and know many teachers. As a taxpayer and a parent I am pleased and impressed by these folks, to whom we have entrusted our childrens’ future.
I live in Middle Township, and have witnessed first hand the services of all our public servants. We are very fortunate to have such professional employees. The efforts of the chief of police, fire commissioners and Superintendent of Schools to keep the taxpayers involved and enlightened are truly commendable. The popularity behind this conservative movement is more the promise to reduce taxes than it is anything else. While our services are being reduced, our neighbors and friends are losing their jobs, and our tax monies are now being funneled to out-of-town businesses. The conservatives are screaming for more without realizing what it is that they will get more of. Wouldn’t you think they might wonder why their taxes are not going down at least proportionately to their loss of services? I’m sure Rush, Glen or Sean (their holy trinity) will explain it all for them in a book.
Watching the politics in my own community turned me against our local Democrats, but this half-crazed movement by conservatives, even going as far as to rename themselves TeaPublicans, is really over the top. I hope this movement will fade as the new TV season grabs their attention. Meanwhile as a registered Republican (don’t think for one minute that was easy to write) I am a self-pronounced spokesperson for my group who have been meeting at Wawa to form the CoffeePublicans. You will recognize us as the wide-eyed shaky dudes you can just tell disrespect everything America stands for, even if we are veterans, Christians and family folk. Actually I’ve got to get my lazy butt to the Board of Elections so I can become unaffiliated once again.
For those who may have been confused by my support for my friend Jerry Thornton, I hope this letter clears things up. If this is at all possible, it would be greatly appreciated.SAM KELLY
