To The Editor:
I want to comment on the story of the renovation of the Lower Township Recreation Center. It failed to give the proper name of the center. It is the Paul R. Will Recreation Center, named after the man that helped bring Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball to our area over 50 years ago.
My father, along with Jerry Flynn, an officer in the United States Coast Guard at the time, and Ben Levinson, the owner of Ben’s Restaurant, where Uncle Bill’s restaurant on Bayshore Road in North Cape May is now located, worked tirelessly to bring a recreation program to this area.
I can remember going door to door with my brothers and our friends asking for donations to help pay for our baseball uniforms and equipment. My father was able to convince Carl and Lawrence Mitnick, North Cape May developers, to donate land so we could build our first baseball field.
My father had his hands full, raising five children and holding a full-time job in Philadelphia, commuting back and forth to work daily on the old Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Line, but he always found time in his busy life to make sure the children in this area had a place to go and play ball.
Former Mayor Robert Conroy dedicated the building to our dad while he was in office, and we will always appreciate his effort in remembering our father.
