‘Christie Should Get Off His Bully Pulpit’

By Lamken

To the Editor,
Gov. Chris Christie continually blames public employees for the pension disaster the State of New Jersey is facing. I find that incredulous.
From Governor Whitman on down the line, it was the governors and legislators who did not adequately fund the state’s pension program; in fact, they ‘borrowed’ from it. They broke the law and Christie recklessly continues to follow in their footsteps.
Our governor repeatedly calls our public employees ‘political thugs,’ all the while it is they who continually pay into a pension fund the state mismanaged, under financed, and bankrupted.
While I can easily understand there is no political advantage for Christie to attack the former governors and legislators who participated in this debacle, our governor, who continues to shortchange the pension fund, is misguided if he thinks any court in the land will side with him when that time comes. The State inadequately funded its required share of the pension program and everyone knows it, especially him.
Christie should get off his ‘bully pulpit’ and make better use of his time rectifying the pension fund inequities rather than impugning the integrity of those who perform a public service and live up to their responsibilities.
