Chapin House Ideal Solution to Homeless Issue

By Barbara Allison, Erma

To the Editor:
We have the solution to the homeless problem!
We need more affordable housing. We need employers to hire their summer employees for 20 weeks so they can get unemployment during the winter.
We need more bus routes coming through, and we need Fare Free Transportation over the weekend. We need employers to pay their help wages that they live on.
An idea Cape Hope has is to purchase the Chapin House and make it into transitional housing units. It is already set up for this.
The county desperately needs more daycare centers. The building could easily provide a large daycare center so parents at the Chapin House could work. Other parents in the county could send their children there too.
Cape Hope has received many calls from single-parent families who cannot pay their rents. They are working, but not making enough to pay $1,200-1,600 a month for an apartment, house, or motel room. This population would be the most fitting for the Chapin House.
Families could have safe, affordable housing while they learn a trade at the Cape May County Technical School or another program of their choice. Their children would be cared for, and the family can get on their feet to find a permanent place to live.
The Chapin House is located close to Social Services, Catholic Charities, The Family Success Center, Social Security, the Branches, and area businesses. Buses are easily available. It is the ideal solution to this problem.
The only setback is that the Chapin House is for sale at the price of $4.1 million. This is out of Cape Hope’s capacity, but if the county agencies and administrators can come together, there are ways to make this work.
Not all homeless people are addicts and alcoholics. Many who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness are working hard, but just not making enough to survive.
Once this population is helped, other buildings can be set up for aging out homeless youth, singles, and the elderly, but we need to start somewhere. The problem has been ignored long enough. It is time to move forward and find solutions.
