Celebrate Trees on Arbor Day

By Karla Kiefer, Cape May

To the Editor:
A man named Joyce Kilmer wrote, “Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree.”
With forest fires, storm damage, and logging, trees need to be continually managed. Arbor Day Foundation works to educate with a newsletter and maintain forest stewardship.
In the habitat of Dr. Seuss’ Lorax story, the forest is decimated by big business. Who speaks for the trees that have no voice?
J. Sterling Morton organized the first Arbor Day in 1872. Arbor Day in New Jersey is the last Friday in April annually. For more information, contact New Jersey Forest Service, (609) 292-2532.
My hometown of Cape May has a Tree City USA designation. I have had the pleasure of the forests and shade trees in our Garden State for over 30 years.
