Celebrate Constitution Week Sept. 17-21

By Munson-Siter

To The Editor:
Every year, from Sept. 17 to 21, this nation honors the establishment of our Constitution. This year marks the 226th anniversary of the Constitution. Let us honor this, one of the founding documents of our nation.
Many countries have used it as a basis for their own governments. Our Constitution was one of the first governing documents that acknowledge the importance of the ‘ordinary citizen’ as opposed to gentry, nobles and royalty. It has successfully stood the test of time over the past 226 years, despite the many changes in our country and our government.
Let us use Constitution Week this year to acknowledge how well the Constitution, written by our patriot ancestors, has stood the test of time. Consider the importance this document still has to our way of life today, think about how it will hopefully continue to influence our future. Many people in the news today pontificate about their rights under the Constitution, but how many of us really and truly understand what our Constitutional rights are?
Let us acknowledge the rich history of this document, and think deeply about how it has affected the development of this country and our current culture and society. I am vice-regent, Cape May Patriots Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
