Bike Paths are Great for Cape May County

By Jespersen

To the Editor:
There was a great centerfold spread in the May 21 edition of the Herald about the current and planned bike paths in Cape May County. I can only say it’s about time the virtues and pleasure of cycling in our county got some media attention. Where else can you ride all day and only encounter a hill when crossing one of the bridges to a barrier island? The completion of the bike path from the County Zoo to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry will be another wonderful tourist attraction and benefit to the residents of the county.
I suggest the county could be made an even bigger draw for cyclists with some additions to the existing and planned mainland bikeways and the existing Cape May to Somers Point Tour Guide produced by the State DOT. Wouldn’t it be great if the bike path to the ferry was extended up Beach Drive along the Delaware Bay and then over to Bayshore Road to emerge in Green Creek where it could meander along Burleigh Road to Whitesboro and rejoin the Middle Township bike path? And why not take advantage of the Cape May Seashore Line rail bed to extend the bike path from the college up to Woodbine and then over to Belleplain State Forest?
I understand the new southbound bridge over Great Egg Harbor is going to have a bike lane. Shouldn’t there be some recommended bike friendly routes when the cyclists get across the bridge? I wonder if the Chamber of Commerce couldn’t enlist the help of some of the bike shop owners, wineries and bike friendly restaurants and motels in developing a Cyclist’s Guide to Cape May County. Should the county have a cycling master plan to guide how a cyclist friendly Cape May County evolves?
While the crowded summer roads dictate the need for caution by cyclists, the spring and fall seasons are a delight to ride in Cape May County.
