Because She Was Honest, She Lost Lily

By Harris

To The Editor:
On Aug. 1, my cat had a heart attack and died at age 5. When I read the article in the Herald on Aug. 4 about the Cape May County Animal Shelter having an abundance of cats, I decided to go to the shelter and find a new cat.
On Sat., Aug. 7, I found Lily. I paid a $70 adoption fee, went home and waited for the call to come and pick up Lily. However on Tues., Aug. 10, I received a call from Judy, the manager, saying she had a problem with the adoption.
Her problem was the declawing of the kitten. When I said my veterinarian had no problem with the declawing, she stated that it was a “big” problem for her. I told her that I had adopted two cats from the shelter before and they were both declawed because they were for companions, and not mousers; they were only house cats. She informed me I could come back and get my money.
Incidentally, when I informed the attendant who was showing the kittens I was going to declaw, she never said declawing was prohibited. She said it wasn’t a good idea because it causes cats to bite; mine never did.
Evidentially Judy is not anxious to get the cats adopted. Because I was truthful, I lost Lily.
