To The Editor:
In the wake of Sandy, I felt compelled to share my opinion on beach replenishment and conservation. As lifelong resident of Cape May County, I have witnessed the shifting of sands over time. My profession has provided me the opportunity to view coastal communities from Maine to Florida, first hand over the last 30 years. While many communities have squandered beach replenishment resources, Avalon has valued every grain of sand. I do not live in Avalon and have no connection to its leadership. I walk Avalon beaches and boardwalk regularly. When viewing the town in the wake of Sandy I must say it was more than luck that protected the Avalon community during the storm. Avalon’s consistent and constant vigilance of beach resources over many years paid dividends. Every business and property on the island benefited from the protective dune line. Avalon’s beach resource maintenance and conservation is a model by which all recipients of replenishment resources should follow.
We may all take sand in our shoes for granted. We only need to look north to understand the next Sandy could take it all away. Well done Avalon.
