To the Editor:
I admit that I had my doubts regarding the timely completion of the Avalon Boulevard (Ingrams Thorofare) Bridge project when I observed no one working on many beautiful, warm winter days.
As spring approached, it seemed that progress was being made. Then, the Jersey barriers were removed and I was ready to compliment the county on a job well done. Not so fast.
It seems that somehow the job isn’t quite finished and repair work is needed on the smaller bridges, as well as the outbound lane of the big bridge. I guess no one thought of this during the many months of very limited traffic and decided to back traffic up to Route 9 during the very busy late spring.
When I called the County Engineer’s Office, and then the Public Information Office, there was not only no one there, but the listed number took me to a conference call line requiring a password. I guess that’s one way to avoid criticism and questions, but it’s not really good public service.
I emailed the county, but did not get a response. I am asking why this work was not done earlier. Is the contractor being penalized for not finishing on time?
Why can’t this work be done at night when traffic is much lighter, and why can’t I call and ask these questions of the public servants responsible for this mess?
I don’t expect an answer from the county, but I think we all deserve one.
