To The Editor:
After reading Art Hall’s May 26 column, “Tend to Your Knitting,” the word “hypocrite” kept buzzing around my head. Hall, who is unabashed about wearing his religion and conservative political views on his sleeve, apparently draws the line when his sleeve touches his wallet. The only reason Hall implores his Methodist bishops to stay out of the “political agenda” and not support reducing carbon emissions, less consumption or, his words, “Take care of the earth” is for one underlying reason: Cash. Hall needs more and more consumer and business consumption, so the Herald can get more advertising in his paper — so he can make money.
Herald readers know all too well that Hall has no problem mixing his religious beliefs into the political arena when it comes to issues such as abortion, school prayer, marriage, and, if he could, edit the Constitution to declare that we are a certified Christian nation. But when church environmental doctrine differs from Hall’s moral (financial) compass, he has no problem with excessive consumption, waste, pollution and global warming. After all, the church isn’t paying his bills.
