To The Editor:
Texas governor and Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry wants to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency. He wants to invade America’s public lands, including the magnificent Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and drill for oil wherever he thinks there might be a drop lying under these national treasures of beauty and solemnity. In recognition of his plan to feed our gluttonous, unconscionable addiction to fossil fuels by sacrificing these gems of God’s creation, I have revised the lyrics of our musical tribute to America’s natural beauty, so that they reflect Perry’s values and ethics. The new lyrics go something like this:
Oh fossil-fuel-befouled, polluted skies,
For oil-flecked waves of grain.
For blackened mountains denuded
Above de-fruited plains.
America, America,
Perry desecrated God’s creation.
And crown his greed with materialism
From sea to oil-derricked sea.
The title of this new version of “America The Beautiful” would be “America the Polluted, Mutilated, and Defiled.” The beauty of the revision is that other names can be substituted for Perry, and the message remains the same.
Write to your congressperson and ask him or her to sponsor a bill to change “America The Beautiful” to “America The Polluted, Mutilated, and Defiled.”
