As families around Cape May County prepare for the holidays and traditions that we have all carried on for generations, sadly at this point, one tradition will not be around: the football rivalry between Middle Township and Lower Cape May high schools.
As parents of students at LCMR know there are some injuries to our players and out of safety concerns for them, LCMR forfeited the game against Holy Spirit this week. Now the Cape Atlantic League in their infinite wisdom has said that LCMR will have to forfeit the rest of their games. High school football is not the NFL but the NFL has its rules and regulations against players not participating in games if they have concussions or serious injuries. Should high school football be any different?
As far as I am concerned, LCMR coaches are doing the right thing forfeiting the game; they are protecting our children. This decision impacts many things, not just the players in those games. Our children will not be able to perform in pep band, cheerleading or even singing the National Anthem at the games. The money that the concession stand takes in funds the After Prom, which is keeps our children safer on prom night. They were also giving away bubbles at the last game in lieu of a donation with all the proceeds going to autism. LCMR has a multitude of wonderful teachers and staff that keep our children safe everyday and it is clear to see the league is being unjust in their decision to have LCMR forfeit the remainder of the season.
