Age Has Nothing to do with the Presidency

Letters to the Editor 2019

By Micki Goldberg, Court House

To the Editor:

Hey! I get it. I’m 83. My husband is 86. Larry walks 3 miles three times a week. He does our food shopping every week and, hallelujah, finally is the main chef in our home.

I’m a trustee on the board of Volunteers in Medicine, still reading a book a week, obsessed with worry about gun murders in our country and the rise of white supremacy, and busy keeping up with our three children and eight grandsons. So, we’re productive citizens, as always.

So don’t tell me that our president is too old to continue being president.

I get it. You’re worried he may not survive a second term and you’re worried that our vice president could become president.

Were you worried when Nixon chose Spiro Agnew as his veep? Were you worried when Bush 41 chose Dan Quayle as his veep? Oh. I get it. Kamala Harris is a Black woman, so you’re worried that a former prosecutor and U.S. senator is not qualified to be president.

President Biden has restored honor to the presidency and pride in our democracy.

Unemployment is at its lowest in many years. Inflation is dropping. The first bipartisan gun control bill was passed last year. Support for Americans in the form of $1,200. Twice… to citizens struggling during the pandemic. The hiring of more workers in the last two years than in six years before.

Increased support for veterans by acknowledging death and severe health problems due to burn pits in our former wars.

Pride in our country throughout Europe capitals.

I get it. You still think he’s too old. Other than his age, you think he’s OK.

The Republicans are thinking of running a twice impeached, indicted, racist rapist to be president in 2024. A man who staged a coup against our democracy.

Members of his political party are publicly supporting him, while privately, they call him crazy, are embarrassed by his continued misogyny, and fear his lies against them personally.

Our country is in trouble. Mass murders are consuming our news cycles. None of us are safe. Schools, supermarkets, churches, synagogues, nightclubs, and concerts. Books are being banned. Books that you and I read and loved are being denied to our young people. Women are being denied their basic right to health care I get it. Do you get it?

A choice for president must be made based on the honor, the intelligence, the respect and love for the citizens of our country and the Constitution of the United States of America!

Age has nothing to do with it.
