To the Editor:
After the Civil War, the 14th Amendment was passed. It states that anyone born in the U.S. is a citizen. The purpose was to protect freed slaves by guaranteeing them citizenship.
Now, in the 21st century, that amendment can be exploited by persons who come to the U.S. illegally, have a child, and they know the child will be protected by citizenship and will be eligible for any entitlement services.
Rather than trying to build a wall to keep out illegal aliens, perhaps we should have another amendment to the Constitution, one that will nullify the 14th Amendment. A new amendment can simply state that anyone is a citizen as long as one or both parents are also legal citizens; thus, if neither parent is a citizen than the children are not protected as citizens.
It will be a long process to have this amendment written and added to the Constitution. It is not the kind of quick solution that Trump, who wants immediate gratification, can appreciate, but such a new amendment could, in the long run, be more advantageous than trying to build a wall or sending troops to the border.
