‘Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely’

By Wall

To The Editor:
I am writing about the political ad, Re: “An Open Letter from 50 Elected Officials to Sen. Van Drew.” It points to a trend in this county, which should be of concern to all residents. I am not raising the issue that the ad cleverly accuses Van Drew of distorting the record of Judge DeWeese, even though the 50 signatories know that this accusation is completely false. Rather, I would draw your attention to a disturbing fact that the inadvertently and without intention exposes under a very bright light that Cape May County is politically controlled by the Republican Party.
I harbor no ill will against the Republicans. In fact I am a registered Republican. However, our political system is based upon two-party representation. There may be a majority and a minority but there must be both. Van Drew and Assemblymen Milan and Albano are the only counter balance to complete Republican control of this county and that is why the voters need to understand that they must be re-elected. To do otherwise will be to risk the application of Lord Acton’s maxim “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
I must disclose that I am a post-operative pancreatic cancer patient, and as such, I need a daily pharmaceutical substitution for my lost pancreatic enzymes. Even with private insurance I was not able to afford the medication. I made three appeals to the pharmaceutical company, which were callously rejected. I placed a call to the senator’s office and within a matter of three days a large box of the pills arrived on my door step.
In fact, they arrived a week ahead of the company’s approval letter. The offices of Van Drew and assemblymen Milam and Albano are widely known for their excellent constituent services. I believe it is fair to say that they are unrivalled because of the dedication these gentlemen give to their residents. All voters need to carefully consider whether or not they wish such service to continue.
