To the Editor:
Last year, taxpayers in Lower Township seemed pretty comfortable. It was an election year and change was in the air. There was talk of dissolution of the LTMUA and moving the police station to the Villas and costs vs. savings were hot topics.
That aside, the elections happened and there became a shift in control of the council. Along with that, came a change in the township manager. And it is no coincidence that during the election year, taxes were held down, but everyone should have known, after the election, things would be different – regardless who won.
Everyone wanted additional policemen, there were increased costs for salaries and benefits and professional services. Something you cannot get away from, but I have to give credit to Council and the township manager for trying their best to keep taxes to a minimum and the township manager for taking time to break down the budget and explain the reasons for the tax increase.
I occasionally drive around the township and I must say, there is a lot of ground to cover. Our township employees do a wonderful job in keeping the township clean and well protected. All of this comes at a cost and as a long time taxpayer, I don’t mind a small increase, provided there is justification for what we receive in return.
The only alternative to lowering taxes and holding the line, is concessions and layoffs. Something I don’t think anyone wants to see. So have faith in your council and newly appointed officials. Attend meetings and ask questions. I am sure you will see that the council is concerned with holding the line, while providing services we have all been able to enjoy as residents of Lower Township.
