The Jersey Shore in winter is somewhat akin to bears in winter, deep in the woods, sleeping deeply, deep in their caves. This time of year, the boardwalks, beaches and seashore homes of summer are quiet and empty, in a deep sleep of their own, waiting anxiously for spring.
Here, Avalon Lions Club is in its winter hibernation for the first time. Like the town itself, the club loses its members to the lure of warmer weather in winter, so monthly meetings have been canceled until March.
That hibernation doesn’t mean an end to our fundraising activity. In fact, we are operating in slow motion, preparing for our busy season.
In January, we presented nearly $20,000 to help the homeless and feed the hungry. That is just part of our charity budget that tops $100,000 this year.
All that money is raised in the warmer months thanks to the hero sign of summer visitors and residents, then donated all year long to nearly 20 Cape May County charities.
June may seem a long way away, but our annual golf tournament, held at the Avalon Golf Club, is in the planning stages. We are preparing for our holiday weekend White Cane bucket drops, and rallying our members to give a little time and effort to keep our successes going.
Yes, winter is a slow time at the Jersey Shore, but unlike bears, lions don’t sleep. We nap. We’re ready when nap time is over to fulfill our motto: “We Serve.”
